Daily Mass Schedule Changes and More…

HGPI0608 073.jpgAssumption Grotto may have been the only parish in the Archdiocese of Detroit which offered daily Masses every morning and evening.  This was especially interesting given that it is a commuter parish with people coming from every corner of the archdiocese and beyond.  However, not all parishioners who go to daily Mass make the commute and most who do, go to the 7:30 a.m. Mass.

Looking for ways to control costs, Fr. Perrone has decided to permanently cancel the evening daily Mass, with the exception of the holy day of obligation schedule. Also, under consideration by Fr. Perrone, is the First Friday 7:00 p.m. Mass and Exposition in the parish church between the morning and evening Mass, if enough parishioners are interested.  Keeping it long term would be dependent on ongoing interest. So, let Fr. Perrone know if you are among those who would regularly attend the evening Mass on First Fridays.

To have the evening Mass, the parish church was left open from around 6:30 a.m. until after the 7:00 p.m. Mass.  The new plan closes the church after 10:00 a.m. when there is nothing else happening. The exception would be funerals, weddings, or special liturgies.  Watch the bulletin and the website for notes about any special Masses that may come up in the evenings.  This change allows for cost-saving heating and cooling changes, and lights out. The Adoration chapel will be open.

Likewise, the former school, used as a resource building, is no longer going to be open during the week after morning Masses, except on Wednesdays when the homeschoolers meet and special exceptions.  For many years now, some morning Mass-goers – perhaps 4-8 on any given day – have met for coffee, sometimes waiting for the Adoration chapel to open at 9:00.  The gift shop was open for a brief period, on most days.  These will no longer be options, with the exception of Wednesdays.  The school will remain closed during the week.

You can read what Fr. Perrone wrote in the bulletin embedded here.  He may to go into more discussion of the changes discussed next weekend at the Masses, so stay tuned.  There is much more news in the bulletin this week for upcoming events this week and next, so do read through the whole thing.  These will be highlighted in the coming days.
